Negative Effects of Logging

(Students taking notes about the early logging practices in Michigan)

Student: "So, Mrs. A...basically, we got rid of a bunch of trees in Michigan by cutting them down and setting them on fire."
Me:  "Yes."
(silence)
Student:  "What happened to the beavers?"
Me:  "What?"
Student:  "Well..without trees, what did the beavers eat?"
(silence)
(I clearly have a quizzical look on my face)
Student:  "Why aren't you upset about this?  The beavers had nothing to eat!  The loggers just took their food.  It's like a beaver holocaust!"
