The Man

Me:  "So, hippies of the 1960s and 70s were fighting against this ideal family life.  They did not want to conform and believed that 'the man' was holding them down.  'The man' was really defined as an older, white man with short hair that wore a suit everyday to work.  He was not a real, exact person, but an image that the hippies fought against."

(Silence as students are taking down notes)

Student:  "I don't get it.  Who was 'the man'?
Me:  "He wasn't really a person, it was an ideal."
Student:  "I still don't get it.  Who was 'the man'?  Was Jesus 'the man' with his long hair and beard?"
